Boca Raton spring training site pitched

Houston Astros spring trainingWith Palm Beach Gardens passing on a new Houston Astros/Toronto Blue Jays complex, a developer wants to look at a Boca Raton spring training site for the pair.

Glenn Gromann, a local developer and attorney, floated the possibility of a new Astros/Blue Jays complex for the city. From the Palm Beach Post:

“It’s really a trial balloon I floated as a member of the business community,’’ said Gromann, who’s a member of both the city’s planning and zoning board and Downtown Boca Raton Advisory Committee.

“I can tell you the business community in the city of Boca Raton would be extremely supportive of any kind of economic development related to having spring training in Boca Raton.’’

Unless something goes dramatically wrong, there will be a new training site for the ‘Stros and Blue Jays in Palm Beach County: the current discussion centers around where the complex should be located, not whether a new complex should be built. In fact, during the discussions of the proposed Palm Beach Gardens site, opponents didn’t attack the complex for being inappropriate: they questioned the wisdom of placing it so close to an elementary school and protected wetland. With state funding in place, you can bet there will be discussion of a Boca Raton spring training site in coming weeks.
