San Antonio Alamodome exhibition games return

Houston Astros spring trainingYou can expect the Houston Astros to be part of this action, as Ryan-Sanders Baseball works to bring MLB exhibition games back to the San Antonio Alamodome next March.

This past spring the Texas Rangers and San Diego Padres attracted some 75,000 fans to the Alamodome for two games. That worked so well Ryan-Sanders Baseball is taking another run this spring, with an announcement expected Friday. Ryan-Sanders Baseball, of course, owns the Round Rock Express (Class AAA; Pacific Coast League) and has the Nolan Ryan family in the owners. With Nolan Ryan departing the Rangers and Reid Ryan now heading the Astros front office, you can expect the Astros to be involved. From the San Antonio Business Journal:

Valero Energy Corp. spokesman Bill Day confirms that the San Antonio-based company will again provide corporate support for Big League Weekend.

This year, MLB officials will have to compete against the Valero Texas Open, which is scheduled for March 24-30. However, Day says Valero felt it was important to back the baseball series once again.

“This is one of the few major league sporting events that San Antonio gets,” Day says.

Excepting, of course, the NBA’s San Antonio Spurs.
