If you live in Phoenix, you already know the delights of the Valley of the Sun. If you don’t, spend some time acquainting yourself with the Scottsdale side of the greater Phoenix area, because you’ll probably be spending most of your time attending games at Salt River Fields or other local ballparks.
Camelback Mountain, located in the northeast part of town, is a popular destination for hikers and nature lovers. There are four trails – two for inexperienced hikers, running less than an eighth of a mile, and two for very experienced hikers, reaching 1.5 miles. You can find parking for the various trails at East McDonald Drive and Tatum Boulevard. Some warning: even on the shorter trails you run some risk of dehydration and sunburn, so bring water and sunscreen.
Also a great hiking spot: Papago Park. For those just wanting get outside there are some nice level trails through the desert brush, perfect for those of us who make not be in perfect shape after a long winter. (Remember: stay hydrated.) Located near both the Desert Botanical Garden and Papago Park is the Phoenix Zoo, a great place to take the kids. The layout is organized by theme – there are separate trails with Africa, Tropics, and Arizona themes, along with a Children’s Trail – with over 1,300 animals on display, and traversing the whole place should take about three hours.
