There’s a definite Jupiter lifestyle: lots of golf and fishing interrupted by good meals and cheap drinks. True, Palm Beach County is one of the more upscale areas of Florida – rivaling Naples and Sarasota in incomes and amenities – but you’d never know it from the clientele at local hangouts, where millionaires rub elbows with beach bums, all resplendent in their casual clothing.
Between Jupiter and the rest of Palm Beach County, you’ll be able to go out every night to a good restaurant without going to the same place twice.
Despite the Jupiter address, many folks attending Miami Marlins Spring Training at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium are there to enjoy the many high-end offerings of Palm Beach and surrounding areas. It’s an easy drive to Jupiter and Palm Beach from much of the greater Miami area, so many fans just duck in and out for games.
If you stick to the general Jupiter area during spring training. Jupiter is in the midst of a planned Florida community, Abacoa, with all the good and bad that it entails. When the ballpark first opened, it was in the middle of nowhere. Since then the surrounding development has expanded to the point where there are things to do should you decide to stay near the ballpark, such as at the Courtyard by Marriott across the street: you can find plenty of restaurants and movie theaters nearby, since downtown Abacoa is located directly next to the ballpark.
Most of the attractions are located on Town Center Drive and Main Street, which feature a range of bars and restaurants. We’ve also enjoyed more than a few post-game drinks at the Stadium Grill, located across the street from the ballpark. For more substantial meals, check out Costello’s Pizzeria & Trattoria, where the emphasis is on New York-style pizza. US 1, Jupiter; 561/744-5054; thebistrojupiter.com), which specializes in local seafood.
When in Jupiter, you should check out the seacoast. The Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse (Lighthouse Park, 500 Capt. Armour’s Way, Beach Rd and Hwy. 1, Jupiter; 561/747-8380; lrhs.org/JIL.htm) is the oldest structure in Palm Beach County, first lit on July 10, 1860. Designed by George Gordon Meade, a lieutenant at the Bureau of Topographical Engineers and later the general who defeated Robert E. Lee at Gettysburg, the lighthouse is still a working facility. It’s open Wednesday-Saturday, 10-4 p.m., with a $9 admission charge.
There are other spring-training venues within an easy driving distance. You could head 35 miles up the coast to Port St. Lucie (where the New York Mets train), across the county to West Palm Beach (where the Houston Astros and Washington Nationals train), or across the state to Fort Myers (where the Boston Red Sox and Minnesota Twins train).
