San Francisco Giants 2023 Spring Training – If You Go …

Downtown Scottsdale is a curious mix of the kitsch and the artsy; it’s where the hoi polloi in the region step out to buy a cowboy T-shirt for the grandkids and then dine at an upscale restaurant before hitting the well-regarded Scottsdale Art Museum.

Of course, another way to put it is that Scottsdale has something for everyone, ranging from a slew of touristy Old West shops in Old Town to the upscale department stores at the Scottsdale Fashion Mall. This all means you can easily entertain yourself for days in Scottsdale between spring-training games in the Valley.

There are four major districts to downtown Scottsdale: Fifth Avenue, Main Street, Old Town, and Marshall Way. Fifth Avenue features upscale shopping and dining; the Marshall Way Arts District features art galleries specializing in contemporary art from local artists, as well as a wide variety of regionally produced jewelry; Main Street is one of the largest concentrations of art galleries in the world; and Old Town features the aforementioned Wild West kitsch.

The ballpark is directly adjacent to the Marshall Way Arts District, which includes the Scottsdale Civic Center, the Scottsdale Center for the Arts, and the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art. The mall between these buildings is a nice calm spot and well worth a stroll before the game. Right off the mall is a slew of restaurants and watering holes.

In fact, you could spend most of the day wandering around downtown Scottsdale before and after a game.

There are 14 other teams with spring-training venues in the Phoenix area: Chicago Cubs (Mesa), Seattle Mariners (Peoria), San Diego Padres (Peoria), Chicago White Sox (Glendale), Los Angeles Dodgers (Glendale), Cleveland Guardians (Goodyear), Cincinnati Reds (Goodyear), Milwaukee Brewers (Maryvale), Los Angeles Angels (Tempe), Oakland Athletics (Mesa), Texas Rangers (Surprise), Kansas City Royals (Surprise), Arizona Diamondbacks (Scottsdale) and Colorado Rockies (Scottsdale).

Where to Stay: If money is no object, have I got the place for you: The Phoenician. It is the place for pampering and relaxation.

Scottsdale Charros

The Scottsdale Charros in the 1950s. The group is still involved in spring training at Scottsdale Stadium.

But if you’re a working stiff like the rest of us, then you’ll want to stay someplace closer and cheaper. Located in downtown Scottsdale is Comfort Suites Scottsdale, Courtyard Scottsdale Downtown, Amerisuites Old Town, Hampton Inn Old Town, and Marriott Suites Scottsdale Old Town.

Flying In: The closest airport is Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. It’s served by all the major airlines, including United, Delta, Air Canada, American, and Southwest. It’s a pleasant enough airport.
