Not totally a surprise: Tim Tebow was invited to the 2018 New York Mets training camp in Port St. Lucie, as the former football star continues his effort to master pro baseball.
The announcement came as part of a larger announcement about nine minor leaguers being invited to camp at Port St. Lucie. the 30-year-old Tebow, a Heisman Trophy winner at the University of Florida who went on to a short NFL career, certainly drew interest in the Mets training camp while attracting crowds at Columbia Fireflies and St. Lucie Mets minor-league games, where he compiled a .226 batting average with eight home runs. That same interest should be present at First Data Field and the adjoining training facility in 2018. And while last year had some pleasant moments for all involved — Tebow certainly did the PR thing on a high level and seems to genuinely enjoy interaction with fans everywhere — he’s now at an age where he must prove things on the field.
