The Washington Nationals are exploring options for spring training; while the team has been negotiating with Brevard County to improvements to Space Coast Stadium, it has also been looking at other areas for a new complex.
And one of those areas is Osceola County, where the Houston Astros already train. The Nationals have approached the county about the possibility of a new spring-training complex somewhere in Kissimmee; the ballpark would also serve as the new home of the Brevard County Manatees (High Class A; Florida State League).
No surprise: the owners of the Manatees have been looking for a new home for years now, focusing their efforts on the greater Orlando area. A new ballpark in Kissimmee would bring minor-league baseball back to the area and give Orlando one more major spring-time attraction. The Treasure Coast isn’t exactly rocking when it comes to spring training, and even though Space Coast Stadium and the adjoining Barger Complex are nice facilities, their location works against them as spring training shifts to the west of Florida.
