McKechnie Field upgrades approved

New McKechnie Field

Renovations of McKechnie Field, the spring home of the Pittsburgh Pirates, will go ahead in time for completion for Spring Training 2013.

The $7.5 million upgrades will add new seating and a wraparound concourse to the ballpark, which will be 90 years old next spring. Other improvements on tap include:

A new center-field boardwalk area with tiki bar, restrooms and concessions.

New roofs over the three main seating areas behind home plate and down each line.·

New covered outfield bleachers, bringing the total seating capacity to 8,500.

New concession stands behind the grandstand.

The work will be overseen by·Fawley Bryant Architects and NDC Construction. They will begin in August and be completed in time for spring training next February. Also part of the project: upgrades to Pirate City, the team’s workout facility.
