Planning Ahead for St. Patrick’s Day Games

St. Patrick's Day, McKechnie Field

If there’s an occasion that sums up the carefree nature of spring training, it’s St. Patrick’s Day games, as March 17 matches turn into true events across the Grapefruit and Cactus Leagues. Here are our favorite games scheduled for St. Patty’s Day 2018.

You can bet there will be plenty of sold-out spring-training ballparks on St. Patrick’s Day in 2018: besides being a popular game date, it’s also a Saturday—a day when spring-attendance is strong in any case. Here are the games worth your consideration.

Grapefruit League

Detroit hosts New York. Detroit Tigers fans are known for creating a festive atmosphere on St. Patrick’s Day; it’s a highlight of the schedule for season-ticket holders. Add to that the devoted Yankees fans traveling up from Tampa, and you should have one of the more memorable occasions in all of spring training. You can find tickets here.

Pittsburgh hosts Minnesota. Another traditional St. Pat’s hotspot, LECOM Park and the Pirates are known for pulling out the stops on March 17. You can expect the unexpected when the Twins and their fanbase hit Bradenton. You can find tickets here.

Boston hosts Tampa Bay. An Irish occasion in a Boston ballpark. It’s hard to imagine anything better. Expect a colorful crowd, to be sure. The Red Sox have already sold out this game, but you can buy tickets here.

Cactus League

Day-night doubleheader at Surprise Stadium. The Kansas City Royals and Texas Rangers have scheduled a unique doubleheader at Surprise Stadium on St. Patrick’s Day. The two teams will play two games in a day-night doubleheader. The Royals are hosting the day game (tickets here) and the Rangers are hosting the night game (tickets here).

San Francisco hosts Oakland. It’s a St. Patrick’s Day game and a rivalry game! Both teams are playing two games on St. Patrick’s Day. The Giants are hosting the A’s and sending a split squad to Goodyear Ballpark to take on the Reds (tickets here), while Oakland is heading to Scottsdale and hosting Seattle in Mesa (tickets here). The Scottsdale Stadium game should be the liveliest of the three games. You can find tickets here.

Cubs host Indians in Las Vegas. The annual Cashman Field games hosted by the Chicago Cubs annual draw well, and they should draw even larger crowds on St. Patrick’s Day weekend. Imagine the powerful combination of the Cubs, Las Vegas and St. Patty’ Day weekend. These are split squad games between the Indians and the Cubs; as a bonus, the Cubs are hosting the Indians on March 17 at Sloan Park; you can buy tickets here.
